Arthur Lee & Love film is released on DVD
Here's what the producers had to say about the film: "Love Story is the story of LA band Love & their legendary frontman Arthur Lee. Their tale is one of the great untold rock & roll stories. One of the first mixed race rock bands, the dark vision of their music set them apart from the utopian ideals of the 'Flower Power' generation and the 'Summer of Love' era. Love Story covers their journey from the beginning, to the present day. From their origins at Dorsey High School in South Los Angeles, to their disintegration in 1968, and their continuing relevance to this day. Sadly the interviews we filmed with Arthur Lee were to be his last. He was diagnosed with acute myeloid lukemia and died on August 3rd 2006. The world is a duller place without him." Featuring interviews with Primal Scream's Mani & Bobby Gillespie alongside other featured guests including Shack and Ken Livingstone. The DVD also comes with a booklet containing liner notes from Bobby Gillespie. Below is the advert for the film:

Cherry Red reissue classic Ed Ball albums
Here's what Ed Ball posted about the albums on his MySpace page: "Three albums through one decade - 1982 to 1992 - from the amateur business entrepreneurship of Whaam! Records and ArTpOp! to the outta-control multi-millions madness that was the Creation label. From True Pop Art to Real Psychedelia - 10 years in an open-necked paisley shirt. These are perhaps the records I'm the proudest of from the "Edward Ball Oeuvre". Not least for the labels that they're associated with, but most especially for the songs I crafted for the talismanic Pop Goes Art!, the belief to Independent Thinking on Enjoy, and the commitment to noise and vagueness of the Teenage Filmstars Star. Early O Level and Teenage Filmstars may have more period charm, my later solo records more inclined to melancholic madness, but ten years that define my idea of a journey to the unknown in the world of Independent record-making would be this triple broadside. OUT NOW! Available from all good vendors. Edward the Undignified."
There is also an excellent interview with Ed Ball on the 'Trip Inside This House' blog which you can read by clicking here For those of you looking to buy the Pop Goes Art! album, there is also a strictly limited edition version available: UK Edition: 200 hand-rendered sleeves were delivered to Cherry Red on the 19th of this month. They were duly inserted into copies of Pop Goes Art! (ARTPOP 20). 50 of these are available now for phone order from Cherry Red as of today until stocks last. Tel (0208) 740 4110. Retail price £10.45 p+p. Ask for 'Special Edition Pop Goes Art!' Each sleeve has been individually inked or painted (only ozone friendly arerosols used), stickered, numbered and dated by the legendary Ball Brothers and the Artpop! ArtCrimes Department. Japanese Edition: 150 individually hand-rendered, numbered, stickered and dated copies of POP GOES ART! SPECIAL EDITION are available now (without obi and liner note), priced 1,990yen for import from http://diskunion.net/rock. POP GOES ART! STANDARD with obi and japanese liner note will be available from August 30th for 2,300yen, again from http://diskunion.net/rock Be sure to request the Special Edition version to avoid dispointment . . .

Gruff Rhys returns as Neon Neon
Stainless Style has just been released on the Lex record label and also features guest appearances with Spank Rock, Yo Majesty, Fat Lip and Cate Le Bon. The album is a concept album about the life and times of John DeLorean and namechecks Michael Douglas, Raquel Welch and Knight Rider within its tracks. John DeLorean borrowed enormous sums of money [including £85 million from the British Government] in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of building an automotive empire. His crowning glory, the iconic DMC-12, better known as simply 'The DeLorean', was fittingly immortalized as Marty and Doc's time machine in legendary 80s movie Back To The Future. With his jet-setting lifestyle, fast cars and sharp flared suits, the flamboyant DeLorean had no shortage of female admirers and was connected to a string of glamorous lovers including US film and TV star Raquel Welch "The most desired woman of the 70s" according to Playboy Magazine, she became an international sex symbol and was the subject of Neon Neon's first single... Don't let all of that put you off, this is easily the best pop album since Les Rythmes Digitales' 'Darkdancer'. The third single from the album 'I Lust U' is released tomorrow (24th March) as 7" picture disc or mp3. The video for the single can be seen below.

Myles Dungan, chairman of the judging panel, commented: “This is a fascinating snapshot of the vibrant Cork music scene of the 80’s. The producer constructed a compelling account of cult rock hero Finbarr Donnelly. The programme itself is an excellent weave of music and the spoken word, and is unobtrusively informative.” The full list of people who contributed to the documentary runs as follows:

All the above news follows an hilarious article on the Guardian website where Dave Simpson proclaimed "Even though I liked the band (My Bloody Valentine) quite a bit at the time, I just can't help feeling sceptical about a comeback. It seems at least 10 years too late; MBV bear no relation to anything currently (or even recently) going on in pop and the thought of an older, mature version of their noise terrorist young selves struggling to fill pub venues has me reaching for my tinnitus cures in despair." Some journalists just do not have a clue about music, shame as I enjoyed reading his Avanti fanzine back in the day. |

House Of Love
re-issue Creation album
The band are also set to perform the first album in its entirety when they play London’s Koko on 13th September as part of the Don’t Look Back series of gigs. They are additionally set to re-release a compilation of early singles and rare tracks on October 22nd. This record, also self-titled, was initially released in 1988 as an import only through Rough Trade Europe and collected together the A & B sides of the bands first 2 singles, Real Animal and Shine On, plus some previously un-released tracks. The re-issue will also feature the A & B sides of the band’s seminal single, Destroy The Heart, which didn’t appear on the original album. The band’s debut long player was first released on Creation Records in 1988 following their much-acclaimed single, Christine. The 10-track album, featuring classic tracks such as Hope, Man To Child & Love In A Car was quickly hailed as one of the definitive independent releases of the late 1980’s. Long out of print, the re-issue will come lavishly packaged in a card gatefold sleeve featuring the definitive original artwork plus extensive new sleeve notes. The band re-formed in 2005 to release the warmly received long player, Days Run Away. This incarnation of the House of Love saw original members Guy Chadwick and Terry Bickers re-united for the first time in over a decade. This original line up, also featuring Pete Evans on drums, will perform at the Don’t Look Back show in September. Tickets for the show are priced at £17.50 and available via www.seetickets.com or www.wegottickets.com or through a 24hr CC line on 0870 264 3333. |

My Bloody Valentine for Coachella 2008?
A My Bloody Valentine reunion has long been the subject of intense speculation, with a seemingly endless stream of rumors surfacing each year about tours, reissues, DVDs, box sets, and even brand new recordings – but as of today none have come to fruition. The band formed in the mid 1980s and released a series of EPs on various labels before solidifying around the lineup of guitarist/singer Kevin Shields, drummer Colm O’Ciosoig, singer-guitarist Bilinda Butcher, and bassist Debbie Googe. After signing to Creation Records, the band released several EPs and two albums, 1988’s Isn’t Anything and 1991’s Loveless, now considered one of the era’s most classic recordings. After a bitter split with Creation, the band signed to Island Records (UK) in 1992, but never produced another release. According to a 1995 interview with Simon Reynolds, the band’s inability to meet their own aesthetic expectations and the financial stress of inactivity led to Shields’ “meltdown.” The rest of the group drifted apart and My Bloody Valentine simply vansihed without ever releasing another album. In recent years, Shields has been an elusive yet constant presence on the music scene, appearing on recordings and stages with groups like Experimental Audio Research, Curve, Dinosaur Jr, and Primal Scream. His solo work as a remixer and recording artist have appeared sporadically, most notably on the soundtracks for Sophia Coppola’s films Lost In Translation and Marie Antoinette. And in the intervening years, the legend of My Bloody Valentine, a band who’s sound was long considered years ahead of its time, has grown much larger in its absence. But now some tantalizing hints have emerged in the past few weeks that suggest the band is finally gearing up for a return to action. In July, several fans reported encounters with Shields at Primal Scream and Dinosaur Jr. shows in England, Ireland, and Russia, each returning with the same story: that Shields very matter-of-factly spoke of My Bloody Valentine in the very present tense. The fans reported Shields said that two new My Bloody Valentine releases are in the works – an anthology of unreleased 90s material and an album of brand new studio recordings – along with the imminent release of remastered versions of the band’s original studio work. He is also reported as saying, on several different occasions, that a 2008 tour is in the works that will feature the band’s original lineup. (Read some of the reports here, here, and here.) Furthermore, in an interview published earlier this year in Magnet magazine, Shields was adamant about the band’s return: “We are 100% going to make another My Bloody Valentine record unless we die or something,” he said. |

Tony Wilson dies from cancer
The Salford-born entrepreneur, who founded Factory records, the label behind New Order and the Happy Mondays, was diagnosed last year. The 57-year-old, also famous for setting up the Hacienda nightclub, underwent emergency surgery in January to remove a kidney. He passed away on Friday evening at the Christie Hospital surrounded by family. A spokesman for the hospital said: "Tony Wilson died peacefully at the Christie Hospital at 6.05pm this evening with his family by his bedside. "Tony was a very great supporter of the Christie and this is extremely sad news. "We would like to extend our sympathy to Tony's family." Doctors had recommended he take the drug Sutent after chemotherapy failed to beat the disease, but the NHS refused to fund the £3,500-a-month treatment. However, members of the Happy Mondays and other acts he supported over the years stepped in and started a fund to help pay for it. His vision and determination played a key role in helping to put Manchester on the map for its music and vibrant nightlife and his entrepreneurial skills inspired people everywhere. Phil Saxe, who used to work at Factory Records with Wilson, said: "Part of me, part of Manchester, part of modern British music has died tonight. "Tony was a genius, basically. "He was a visionary in that he helped bands, who otherwise wouldn't have made it, who were a bit out of the ordinary. "He helped them realise their dreams and through that probably realised himself to be Mr Manchester". BBC journalist Kristan Deconinck sought advice from him in the early 1980s on how to launch an independent record label shortly after Wilson had started Factory records."He couldn't have been more helpful and more patient," Kristan said. "He inspired me - and countless others - to have a go if you believed in something. "That in itself is a great legacy, apart from the vision he had with his label, his shows, his attitude - his contribution to a new culture. "When I later met him, I found him far more amenable than scurrilous rumours had led me to believe and my esteem for the guy never diminished." Speaking before his death, Wilson reflected on life and death. "I used to joke in my early 50s that I'd had such a fantastic life, I'd be happy to die," he said. "And then suddenly, I find some other reasons for living and just like get excited again about life when it comes along. So that was slightly annoying. I think I was a lord of my own presumption for thinking I'd be happy to die". Tributes to Anthony Wilson have been flooding in from across the globe - both from people who had worked with him and those who had enjoyed the entertainment he brought to the world. Speaking on News 24, Radio 2 presenter Stuart Maconie said: "There was no more influential and important figure in music in the last 30 or 40 years. "He was incredibly generous, giving, enthusiastic and supportive of bands around him. "He wasn't a businessman. He just loved the music." The BBC, which employed Wilson, paid its own tribute. "There will never be anyone quite like Tony," a spokesman said. "He was a true free spirit and a passionate advocate of Manchester - the city, its people and, of course, its music." Fan Lewis Hart, from Hyde, Greater Manchester, wrote: "A one off who was an ambassador for Manchester. A huge shock." Another fan, Ross Burton, from Annapolis, Maryland, in the USA, summed up his many achievements with a poignant eulogy: "Thanks Tony for helping to bring me the soundtrack of my life. Rest in peace mate." You can post your own tributes on the BBC website by clicking here Source: BBC |

Mojave 3 split?
After dragging its feet and remaining in the dark about its future, Mojave 3's finally come to terms with its future -- or lack thereof. The band's officially on the back burner, as drummer Ian McCutcheon's revealed the band's thrown in the towel, after two EPs and five full-lengths, most recently last year's Puzzles Like You (4AD). "There are no plans what-so-ever to record another Mojave3 record," he said in a statement focusing on his other band, The Loose Salute. Mojave 3's last few years of existence weren't without its problems. Last summer, bassist Rachel Goswell was forced to take a break from live music due to problems with her ears, while solo projects from Goswell and front man Neil Halstead slowed the act's progress. Halstead and Goswell have solo projects that will continue to brew, while McCutcheon and keyboardist Allan Forrester return to action in The Loose Salute. Source: Aversion.com |
